In 1868, John Logan, the commander of a veterans' organization, pushed for a national holiday to strew with flowers or otherwise decorate the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion.

Since 1922, a wreath has been laid at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Memorial Day.
